Dear Aspiring Students,,
Welcome to the website of Calcutta Business School or CBS as it is popularly known!
Thank you for your interest in CBS. It is my pleasure to give you a brief overview of the activities of CBS and explain our philosophy and approach to management education. Currently CBS conducts a 2year full time Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Management (PGDM) and several executive development programmes. There are currently more than 3500 MBA equivalent programmes being conducted in the country. What then may have been the reason for establishing another management school? The Shri Shikshayatan Foundation, Kolkata, which has been in the forefront of education in the city of Kolkata for more than fifty years felt that the very well-known management schools in the country were not in a position to meet the burgeoning need of industry for high quality managerial personnel. Also, at the time of setting up of CBS in 2008, apart from IIM Calcutta there weren’t many management schools that were well-known for imparting high quality management education in the eastern part of India. CBS was therefore conceived to fill this void.
I am happy to inform you that six batches of the PGDM Programme have already graduated. The alumni of this programme are working as executives in enterprises in different parts of the country. I feel proud to inform you that several of our alumni have either become first generation entrepreneurs or have joined their family owned enterprises where they are contributing to their growth and development and creating jobs instead of seeking them.
At CBS our Mantra is “Pursuit of Excellence”. We believe that in today’s business environment characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) managers have to learn to constantly update themselves in terms of knowledge and skills they need to be effective in their organizations. Therefore at CBS we try to inculcate self – learning among students. Our teaching method is learner – centric. The onus of learning is on the student. The faculty members are only facilitators in the learning process. Research has shown that this method of teaching – learning is more effective than the traditional teacher – centric pedagogy.
The underlying philosophy of our PGDM Programme is that there are three legs on which the edifice of management education stands; (a) Knowledge, (b) Skills and (c) Attitudes. These three legs are supported by learning in the classroom, learning through co-curricular activities and learning through extra – curricular initiatives and efforts. The courses are taught by faculty members, many of whom possess doctoral degrees from top notch universities / institutions in India and abroad. Several faculty members have worked in business organizations for extended periods of time. This mix of faculty members from the academia as well as industry helps us to conduct an excellent programme which is academically rigorous while at the same time relevant to industry.
Given our educational philosophy, apart from the courses that are part of the curriculum we organize learning activities in the form of modules on communication, team-working, leadership and team building, understanding the working of industrial organizations through intensive industry visits; student club activities that are synergistic with the curriculum like marketing, finance, entrepreneurship, etc., and several extra – curricular activities that are also driven by students.
Inspite of the intense competition in the field of management education in India we see a very bright future for our students. We have undertaken a transformational change process at CBS that would encompass multi-dimensional growth covering academic programmes and research, student intake, faculty enhancement and development, development and growth of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that are designed to develop organizational leaders and provide a life-changing experience to our students.
