FORBS 2019

The Second International Conference on Frontiers of Operations Research and Business Studies (FORBS) in association with Operations Research Society of India, Durgapur Chapter was held in the premises of Calcutta Business School on 27th and 28th of December, 2019. We had respectable Jhawar Sir as our chief guest. The inaugural session was conducted by lighting the lamp. The session began with the welcome note by Prof. Sanjib Biswas.

The primary purpose of the International Conference was to bring under an umbrella the diverse credos, doctrines and ideologies of eminent speakers, erudite professors and sagacious industrialists from different parts of the world. There were various topics discussed by people form different backgrounds. The conference being a two-day event had the speakers divided for the first and the second day. On the first day of the colloquium we had

  • Prof. Jyotirmoy Sarkar from Indiana University, USA
  • Prof. S. P. Mukherjee, Former Centenary professor at University of Calcutta.
  • Prof. Swapan Bhattacharya, former Director of NIT Durgapur and NIT Surathkal. He has also been the former president of Operations Research Society of India (ORSI).
  • Prof. Debabrata Datta, senior scientist, ex-head, radiological physics and advisory decision, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.
  • Prof. Kalyan Chakraborty, Economics professor at Northern State University, school of Business, South Dakota, USA. 

The learned academicians spoke on various subject matters viz. Lessons from a game with focus on probability and the game of Casino, Challenges involved in Decision making, Problem Solving techniques for socio-economic systems with reference to statistical data, Risk Management in software development and engineering projects, Economics as early childhood education and the recent developments. The day had preponderance of technical topics which absorbed the attention of every individual attending the sessions.

The first day of the event ended with a cultural event with the focus on Unity in Diversity. Students of Calcutta Business School actively participated in the cultural event.

The second day of the colloquium had ascendancy of topics related directly with real life scenarios thereby developing and retaining the interest of all. On the second day of the event we had:

  • Prof. Prithwiraj Nath, Professor of Marketing and Associate Director of the Retail Institute at Leeds Beckett University, UK.
  • Prof. Arun Sen, Professor at Mays Business School, Texas A&M University, USA.
  • Mr. Avez Sayed, Chief Risk Officer, SBI General Insurance.
  • Mr. Sabarna Roy, Senior VP at Electrosteel group.
  • Mr. Atanu Sen, former MD and CEO at SBI Life Insurance. 
  • Mr. S. Panja, Additional Director at West Bengal Export Promotion Society.
  • Mr. Debopam Raha, ED at KPMG Advisory Services.
  • Mr. Atul Agarwal, Director at Apt Software Avenues Pvt. Ltd.
  • Mr. Abhishek Sinha, Sales Director at Accenture consulting, Stockholm, Sweden.

The topics discussed by the knowledgeable intellects were Touch or No Touch Product Judgement and Individual Orientations, A review of Operations, Management and analytics in US Healthcare delivery, Industry 4.0 and its implication on Society and Business. This topic was a panel discussion and an interactive session between the panel members and the listeners. Mr. Abhishek Sinha created an impact upon us with his erudition. He made us aware how Technology is changing jobs globally and its future prospects. Mr. Sinha also enlightened us about the areas that are likely to create jobs in the upcoming years.

We are heartily thankful to all the dignitaries who helped us gain valuable insights of various topics. I, as a student of Calcutta Business School, am really thankful to my institution for giving me the opportunity to learn so much! The plethora of learning would definitely benefit students, academicians and research scholars attending the session.

I would be looking forward to attending more such sessions, in my future during my course of PGDM, which has left an indelible mark on my mind.
