Brain Mapping: A life exploring innovation

World has relatively progressed at a significant rate. The technology today has pushed the boundaries of innovation to higher echelons. Today everything exists because of human intellect and its vast capability of aspiring for more. What has contributed to this feat? The ‘human brain’ constitutes 100 billion neurons and support cells. The well defined organ can store beyond any existing memory device. Research is being carried out to understand the magnificent working and flow of information that has resulted in profound outcomes. 

Brain Mapping is one such branch of Science which has emerged, that attempts to explore various dimensions of brain and unveil its powers. Scientists are aiming to find out which part of brain gives us certain abilities like being creative or logical. This is referred as localization of function. Brain mapping also aims to examine how our brains react with change in environment i.e. how brain changes with aging or through learning. The research shall also reveal how neurological disorder affects the brain and how it can be reinstated to being normal. The process shall give structural map of brain and can help in identifying various regions, functional lobes, specialized centre, neuron circuit and various other vital components. 

Scientists use various methods to study brain. A comparison of diseased brain with healthy brain can reveal various abnormalities and its causes. Also, they examine brains of mammals, humans and primates to understand how vertebrate and  invertebrate nervous systems work. To identify different neurons in brain, a technique named “Brainbow” has emerged which maps different neurons with different colors and makes it easier for identification and study. This technique also helps in understanding how interconnection of neurons change with aging. Engineers are developing software to help researchers compare data and verify how brain of an Alzheimer patient is different from a healthy brain.

The brain mapping is currently in  a developing stage and once it achieves its full fledged color, the branch shall unveil various underlying theories. The unanswered questions in the field of neurology shall be satisfied with a befitting reply and possibly new theories will emerge which will enhance the future prospects. I as a  PGDM student of Calcutta Business School currently, wonder how it will change the future world and how will it benefit future generation in detecting various complicated neurological issues.
