Dr. Shekhar Chaudhuri
Dear Aspiring Students,
Welcome to Calcutta Business School or CBS as it is popularly known!
Thank you for your interest in CBS. It is my pleasure to give you a brief overview of the activities of CBS and explain our philosophy and approach to management education. Currently, CBS conducts a 2 year full-time Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Management (PGDM) and several executive development programs. Presently, there are more than 3,500 MBA equivalent programs being conducted in the country. What then may have been the reason for establishing another management school? The Shikshayatan Foundation, Kolkata, which has been in the forefront of education in the city of Kolkata for more than fifty years, felt that the very well-known management schools in the country were not in a position to meet the increasing need of industry for high quality managerial professionals. Also, at the time of setting up of CBS in 2008, apart from IIM Calcutta, there weren’t many management schools that were well-known for imparting quality management education in the eastern part of India. CBS was therefore conceived to fill this void.
I am happy to inform you that six batches of the PGDM Programme have already been graduated. The alumni of this programme are working as executives in big enterprises in different parts of the country. I feel proud to inform you that many of our alumni have either become first generation entrepreneurs or have joined their family-owned enterprises where they are helping to grow the businesses.
Our mantra is 'Pursuit of Excellence.'
We believe that in today’s business environment characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA), managers have to learn to constantly update themselves in terms of knowledge and skills they need to be effective in their organizations.
Our teaching method is learner-centric, the onus of learning is on the students. The faculty members are only facilitators in the process. Research has shown that this method of teaching is more effective than the traditional teacher- centric pedagogy.
The underlying philosophy of our PGDM Programme is that there are three pillars on which the edifice of management education stands: (a) Knowledge, (b) Skills and (c) Attitudes. These three columns are supported by learning in the classroom, learning through co-curricular activities and learning through extra – curricular initiatives and efforts. The courses are taught by faculty members, many of whom possess doctoral degrees from top notch universities and institutions in India and abroad. Several faculty members have worked in business organizations for extended periods of time. This mix of faculty members from the academia as well as industry helps us to conduct an excellent programme which is academically rigorous while at the same time relevant to industry.
Given our educational philosophy, apart from the courses that are part of the curriculum, we organize learning activities in the form of modules on communication, team-working, leadership and and team building. Also understanding the working of industrial organizations: through intensive visits; student club activities that are synergistic with the curriculum like marketing, finance, and entrepreneurship.
With these words, I wish you best of luck for the upcoming academic and professional challenges.
