Ergonomics

At a work place, a large number of problems and competencies are bound to occur. With a large number of people working in an organization, the number of problems faced by different individuals also multiplies. To solve the constant growing work complexities, ergonomics comes into play. Ergonomics is the science of fitting the work environment to the employee. It can also be explained as the study of people in their working environment. This study is done to analyse the problems faced by employees at work and ways to reduce the impediments and facilitate the smooth deliverance of work. 

Thus, the study of ergonomics is concerned with how humans and other elements of a system interact with each other. Efficient interaction is facilitated by arranging and designing things that is of use to people. It is the profession that puts to use various theories, principles, data and methods with the focus on well being of humans as well as the overall system performance. Such focus is made in order to enhance the comprehensive system of working.

Ergonomics if often called an applied science. This is because it has application and utility of the existing pattern and knowledge to practical concepts. It concentrates more on scientific knowledge of nature rather than theories and predictions in order to understand the world of nature.

The linchpin of ergonomics is to do away with the discomfort or any kind of risk of injury associated with a piece of work, thereby prioritizing employee satisfaction and well-being. It is a widely expanding applied science assisting and facilitating people to become smart workers in lieu of hard workers. 

The recent of evolvement of technology has made computers a vital part of all our work. The desks, chairs and its allied components need to be assessed properly and regularly in order to reduce the discomfort of people at work. With the advent of mew technology, the need for ergonomics has also increased to a great extent. The straining of eyes after the day’s work or hurting of backbone after hours of work is common for employees to experience. Adjusting the height of the chair on which the employee sits or bringing in a new kind of chair to the workplace would help reduce the discomfort and in this way ergonomics helps people by putting an emphasis to reduce the impact of repetitive movements.

I, as a student of PGDM, understand that ergonomics, its domain and application impact the world at work, at home and all the places in between. It helps to resolve and do away with he effects of sedentary workplace behaviour.
